From humble beginnings at the Legends Leisure Centre, Crewe in 2005, JL Fairs has continued to grow, adding new venues
and themes to our fairs. JL Fairs is run by Debbie Owen, but help is provided by husband Glyn and on fair dates by son Nath and daughter Jo. I started organising events as a teenager while I was a member of Kettering Rotaract Club, during the 1990s I organised party plan evenings. A needleworker since childhood, I started beading in 1995 to create a range of unusual earrings for my own use, however I was bitten by the beading bug and created enough to fill a Christmas craft stall! Crafting is still a favourite past time and I still celebrate traditional crafts which kept me fascinated as a child - watching my mother and grandmother working at embroidery, smocking, dress making and pillow lace. My sister's employment at a local jeweller's initiated an interest in gemstones, which has grown throughout the years to include other rocks and minerals. The seeds of JL Fairs were sown when I was unable to travel to the major bead fairs at Harrow in October or Harrogate in March, so I decided to organise one on my own doorstep, planning for the event began in early 2004 for the original bead fair in the north west of England. A new venue was chosen for the 2006 event ... and there will be further events in 2008 and 2009 The aim of JL FairsJL Fairs bring suppliers and materials to the local beader and craft worker. We keep our admission at just £1, so that visitors have more to spend on the stalls inside! We try to give the crafter the chance to meet the elusive mail order and internet bead suppliers who are often hidden behind their websites and catalogues. |
